  • THE NANDI Archeological site -- Lord Shiva Temple, Cliff Pereira (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
Excavated in Feb. 2000 by JVP Rao (Archeological Survey of India) and D. Kennet (University of Durham). Three phases of building construction have been identified. The earliest is of a unique structure quite unlike any other Hindu, Jain or Buddhist religious building. Brick analysis suggest the first six centuries AD. The Second phase dates from the 7th to 11th centuries and is definately a Hindu temple. The third phase is a more typical Hindu temple with stone construction.

It`s a great mansion, in typical portuguese colonial style, probably of the 19th century, and still is property of one of the most traditional family of Chandor. It is now from all the sons of goaish Doctor of Laws and Teacher José António Camilo Jayme Cotta Cruz and his wife Mrs. Laura de Castro Cotta Cruz.

  • Braganza Mansion, Ruth burgess (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
The Braganza Mansion and the adjoining Braganza-Fernandez Mansion are both well worth a visit. Very opulent in their day, now fading with grace although restoration is slowly occurring. You will probably be shown around by the present day residents, lovely homely yet quietly genteel people with great English and good knowledge of the houses and their history. All they ask in return is a tiny financial voluntary contribution (up to 100 rupees) and that you tell other people to visit, hence this posting on Wikimapia. It's an easy taxi ride from Margao or you can get the train although only three services stop at Chandor per day. Go there!
